Green Ilminster Talk 18th Feb – ‘All about Biochar’ by Carolyn Dare

Dear

Just a quick reminder that our next GI Talk is next Wednesday:

18th February: What biochar can do for soil, climate & gardens – Carolyn Dare from Blackdown Hills Eco Hub

Gardeners, farmers and communities can use Biochar to lock carbon into soil and improve soil health for plants, microbial networks and wildlife. In this talk, Carolyn will explore what biochar is, why it matters, and how even small-scale use can make a difference. She’ll draw on several years of research and trials with Plymouth University and her own experience working with communities to show how biochar can help build living, resilient soil — good for people, plants, and the planet. Her presentation brings together ecological science, community practice and hopeful optimism — ideal for anyone who cares about growing, biodiversity, and meaningful climate action.

If you missed our January talk on Honeybees and Honey (and we don’t blame you – the weather was pretty bad!) James Lowe gave us a great session and the video is now available here.

The next couple of GI Talks are:

18th March: Improving water quality in Somerset – John Bagnall from Wessex Water

John Bagnall is a Principal Environmental Scientist at Wessex Water and will talk about:

  • The River Isle and its importance for the Somerset Levels and Moors
  • What eutrophication is and what its impacts and sources are
  • The water quality of the River Isle
  • Wessex Water’s business plan for the next five year and its impact within Somerset
  • How we safeguard the Somerset Levels and Moors

15th April: Bats of Somerset (and beyond) – Liz Walsh

Join us for a brief insight into the secretive world of bats, to learn about the different species you might see at dusk and dawn and find out why they are so important.

Liz joins us from the Somerset Bat Group and has been studying bats for a decade as a volunteer. She has a particular interest in monitoring wildlife using bioacoustics.

The Venue: Ilminster Arts Centre, 35 East St, Ilminster TA19 0AN Talk starts 7.30pm. As ever, entry is free, but donations are welcome.

Kind regards

Chris
