What are we currently doing?
- Share & Repair Shop – Started in Feb 2022 in Silver Street. We have a team of shop volunteers and repairers working to stop things going unnecessarily to landfill, offering a repair service for items such as vacuum cleaners, lamps, clothes, lawn mowers, musical boxes, irons, power tools, etc. We also accept items as donations to sell at the shop with the aim of becoming self-sustaining, and finally we are aiming to stock items for local people to borrow. We want to make the most of the emerging ‘circular economy’ to benefit us all.
- Tree Group – A key activity that has been running since 2019. So far, the Tree Group has planted more than 3500 trees in and around Ilminster and given away many more with the help of local businesses.
- Litter Picks – Usually every three months, involving volunteers of all ages clearing tons of rubbish from in and round our beautiful town and country, which in turn helps reduce the amount of microplastics in the environment, washing into local water courses. Please see the events page for more information.
- Seed Swaps – Sharing seeds and saving money. Please see the events page for the next Swap
- Working with local government – We have links with the Town Council and Somerset Council, influencing on policy and promoting issues that will help us to achieve our objectives.
- Social and discussion events – We have socials every three months at The Dolphin in Silver Street to discuss Green issues and to be open to new volunteers and potential projects and ideas. We also organise local activities such as Quizzes and Scavenger Hunts to highlight green issues whilst having fun.
- Increasing biodiversity – We are working with the Town Council to increase local biodiversity with the creation of wildflower meadows like the one at West Crescent.
- Liaising with other local and regional relevant organisations – Such as Somerset Wildlife Trust, Transition Town Wellington, Sustainable Chard, Chardstock Eco Group, etc. – we are always on the lookout for how organisations with similar aims are working for the local community and the natural world.
