Summer is coming to an end and the nights are drawing in, so it’s time to let you know about the great season of Green Ilminster Talks we have lined up for you.
23rd September – Rob Grimmond – The Weird and Wonderful World of Moths
Moths are much misunderstood and maligned. Many people believe that all moths are small, brown, harmful creatures that eat clothes and carpets. The truth is very different. Some are very beautiful and have fascinating lifestyles. This talk will hopefully give a much better insight into the world of moths and their impact on the environment. Rob has had an interest in moths for twenty years and is chair of the Somerset Moth Group.
21st October – Dr Colin Ryall – ‘Communication in Birds’
Birdsong is the most familiar form of communication between birds and relates especially to courtship and territorial defence. Birds also employ other approaches including displaying specialised plumage accompanied by complex sounds, movements and sometimes display flights. This talk will discuss the varied types of audible and visual communication, illustrated in large part by UK and European examples but also some species from farther afield. Colin is a retired University Lecturer and Researcher in ecology and environmental management.
18th November – Dr Sue Holland – ‘Growing Resilience: Food Security and the role of Agroforestry’
With wetter winters and drought-like summers, this talk and discussion will look at a way to increase food security whilst also improving biodiversity.
20th January – Sam Fisher from Suez – ‘How our waste is recycled’
We’ve all wondered what exactly happens to our rubbish once it has been collected and Sam from Suez Recycling and Recovery UK is here to let us know.
We are still working on the Feb to April slots, but the dates are confirmed and they will be: 17th February, 24th March & 21st April
The Venue: Ilminster Arts Centre, 35 East St, Ilminster TA19 0AN Talk starts 7.30pm. As ever, entry is free, but donations are welcome.
