Happy New Year!
As we start another new year with one pessimistic news story after another it is easy to feel despondent about the state of our world but here at Green Ilminster we will not give up trying to make a positive difference for our amazing planet. As an organisation we are in our infancy but are growing fast and have a fantastic band of enthusiastic volunteers doing all sorts of amazing work.
Our steering group continue to meet regularly talking about how we can most effectively work with our community to make change, influence attitudes, shine a light on important issues and nurture our own local environment.
We are very concerned about how we as a community will respond to the Climate crisis and the changes that will mean for the way we all live. We believe its about resilience and working together, reducing waste, sharing skills, resources, and knowledge. This year we will be building on all the hard work done so far – there is so much still to do.
Our Share and Repair Shop will be celebrating its first birthday in February, continuing to fix as much as we can – attempting to slow the terrible flow of broken or ‘out-dated’ stuff into landfill. The skills we have amongst our repairers is truly brilliant and we are so lucky to have them giving so much of their time and knowledge to our community. The shop in Silver St is a real hub of positivity. Watch this space!….The Share side of our project is coming very soon! – find out more here.
Ilminster tree project continues its great work, building on the 3000 plus trees planted so far. Volunteer days are the last Saturday of each month, planting trees or maintaining our sites, and generally enjoying tea and cake after all the hard work! Finding new sites is always a challenge but the Tree Project continue to dream of creating a substantial new woodland for the people of Ilminster. Find out more about getting involved here
We continue to work collaboratively with our local Councils, The new Wild flower meadow at West Crescent is well underway – a beautiful new interpretation board is now up explaining what the project is hoping to achieve. We have been working with our Town Council to make this happen under the expert guidance of Jake the Country side Manager.
There is lots more going on throughout 2023 with regular litter picking events throughout the year – real tangible action to directly improve where we live. Green Ilminster also wants to encourage our community to drive down its carbon footprint by providing great entertainment right here! Come along to one of our great quizzes or Scavenger Hunts, details of all our events can be found here.
