October 2023 Newsletter

Hello all,

Green Ilminster Climate Week

We hope this letter finds you all well and that you are enjoying the fine weather….at last a bit of an Autumnal nip in the air!

We are a small team and as usual are working hard on lots of different projects. We have been thinking about trying to establish a dedicated week to try and highlight environmental issues – particularly locally, with the aim of trying to engage more of the community in appreciating where we live and what we can do here to help wider efforts to protect our planet.

With this in mind we have come up with a few events this year which will be taking place the week of 23rd – 29th October – this feels like a good week here in Somerset with the beautiful Autumn colours and the bountiful supply of apples! We would love to develop this week going forward and make it more and more special celebration of our particular place in the world.

We hope you can join us for one or two of the events listed below – hopefully as we establish this week in the Ilminster calendar we will be able to give a little more notice!

Monday 23rd Oct 10am-12pm – Amelia from Somerset Community Action Groups (CAG) will be pitching up outside of our Share and Repair shop and will be able to share information about CAG Somerset, Donate IT and the Fixy project. She will be running an IT Amnesty, so bring down all your unwanted IT equipment and wires!

Tuesday 24th Oct 7.30pm – Jake (Ilminster’s Countryside warden) will be giving a presentation at the Ilminster Arts Centre on the great work that is being done in Herne Hill Nature Reserve. There will be an opportunity to find out how to get involved. This event is free, but donations would be most welcome. There will be refreshments available.

Friday 27th Oct 2-4pmHalf term Litter pick. Meet outside the Share and Repair shop. All equipment is provided, but please wear suitable shoes and bring gloves.

Saturday 28th OctTree Group event. A smaller group of volunteers are attending an event earlier in the week to learn about the mapping of veteran and ancient trees in our area as part of Somerset County Tree Strategy. This event will be about sharing what we have learnt and getting more people involved with gathering the data needed for this project. There will also be tea and cake!!

Sunday 29th Oct 2.30–4.30pm Halloween Pumpkin Trail and Scavenger Hunt. A fun family event along the Cycle path, starting from the post box on Canal Way and finishing at Donyatt Halt, finding items and answering questions along the trail.

We are hoping to also confirm details of a bird walk during this week too – just waiting for final details to be confirmed!

Please get in contact if you would like any more information about any of these events or check out our website https://greenilminster.org.uk/
